How do I get my blood on the test chip?

Modified on Wed, 24 Jun at 10:52 AM

Inside your test kit you will find a pipette. This is for the transfer of blood from your finger over to the test chip. On your pipette you will see a black line, which is used to measure the amount of blood you need. If your finding it tricky, please see below a list of tips, which may help make this step easier for you:

Tips for using the pipette
  • After you have wiped away the first drop of blood allow a bubble of blood (pea size) to form on the tip of your finger.
  • Then place the tip of the pipette to your finger (place the tip at the bottom of the bubble right next to your finger) hold the bulb level (horizontal) or lower than the tip of your finger to collect the blood.
  • When drawing the blood from the finger-prick, take care not to cover the bulb at the end of the pipette – this has a tiny hole in it that needs to remain open to the air to ensure capillary flow. If it is covered, the capillary action is compromised and you may get air bubbles or not be able to draw the sample until it reaches the black line marked on the capillary, therefore giving less volume than required
  • Hold the pipette in the blood bubble to fill it to the black line.
  • Do not squeeze the pipette yet.
  • If the bubble of blood is not enough to fill the pipette to the black line, using the thumb of the hand that you are collecting the blood from - push your thumb up from the base of your finger to the tip whist holding the pipette in place.  You cannot over fill the pipette but you must fill it to the black line.
